About Me

My photo
Hi, welcome to my blog, I am a writer of short stories, children's and YA novels . An acceptance from People's Friend finally made me a published writer! Yeah, happy days! I have since had stories published in The Weekly News and The Last Laugh anthology. My main love is writing children's/YA novels...I'm now enduring a fruitless search for an agent... I also draw and paint, I like to draw animals (usually my adorable crazy cats!)Occasionally famous people and motorcycles.

and another one

Another story back from PF. It took just 8 days. 8 days!!!
I am amazed. I wish all magazines were that quick.
This rejection said the story relied a shade too heavily on its plot. I will have another go, as I was advised a good while ago by Womagwriter..
Any feedback from magazine editors is a good thing, it's worth editing and re submitting. So, I will add that to my to do list.
Am also going to enter The Last Laugh competition at spikethecat
I'm feeling brave...Will submit today. Or tomorrow. Maybe just another check over...

  2. Thank you both!

Suzanne - Are you the Suzanne Jones with a short story in my first ever complimentary copy of PF?
Would be great to know that's you! I'm still so chuffed to see my story in an actual magazine :0

  3. Yes it's my story. And I'm thrilled to know you're in the same issue. Which is yours? - I can't see your name on your blog...

  4. Yay, I'm so pleased!
Mine is 'breakfast in bed' Yours was lovely, have read it three times as I'm busy studying the magazine, trying to figure out the secret formula.
Do you feel you've got PF's requirements sorted? I did, feeling all smug, then bamm! Four rejections. It's so embarrasing when they say 'study the magazine to get a better idea of our requrements', when I think I have studied it to extremes. Oh well. Try again and again...

  5. I absolutely love your story. It's original and touching and I loved the end (was going to give it away there, but there will be people reading this who haven't seen the magazine yet).

No, I don't think I've cracked what they're looking for. That story was written in a bit of rush - I'd finaled in the Writers' Forum comp but didn't sell the story and the fiction editor had asked me to address any further subs to her. Of course I couldn't think of a single thing to write, but made myself sit down and that was the result. I was very surprised, but so pleased when it sold. I then re-wrote the comp entry and sold that a month later. Then got two rejections. And they still have a Christmas story that I'm sure must be lost because I still haven't heard anything after eight months. I'm going to keep trying, though, because it's such a nice magazine. And the fiction editor is so lovely and took the time to tell me exactly where I'd gone wrong with the rejected stories.

Will keep fingers crossed for both of us for lots of sales.

  6. Thank you so much, that means a lot (sniff), getting a wee bit blurry eyed here.
I hope you get some good news re your christmas story, I think a long wait is a good sign with them.
I was just wondering, do you send your future subs to the person who bought your last story, or does it not matter? I have done, but the replies (rejections) were from someone else, so I'm none the wiser.
Will join you in the finger crossing!

  7. I still address subs to the fiction editor and any replies have come from her.

I read on womagwriter's blog that we should be putting K/A (for known author) on the envelope of any subs, so I did this with the last one I sent in (a couple of weeks ago). But I wrote it in very small letters in the corner (felt a bit of a fraud - on what planet can I possibly imagine I can describe myself as a known author?) so they probably won't see it anyway.

  10. Good luck with the writing. You write Sci-fi? So do I -- well, Sci-fi romance, really. I have a story coming out in May from RRP.

I saw you at Suzanne Jones' blog and thought I stop by to say Hi.
